    Upcycling at its best

    Upcycling at its best

Giving items we no longer use a second life, rather than discarding them, is the essence of upcycling. There are wonderful examples of upcycling throughout Namibia as people think of ingenious ways to use old things.

We came across this chicken coop in the Omaheke Region recently where an old minibus has been put to good use. Raised off the ground and enclosed with shadecloth, it is guarded by a dog that benefits from the shade it provides underneath.

An important part of a self-sufficient homestead, chickens provide eggs and nourishment for the family. While they are often free to wander around the yard during the day happily eating kitchen scraps, insects and worms, the chicken coop provides a haven for them during the night and in the hours when no-one is home, safe from both two-legged and four-legged predators
