Taken in the 1950s or 60s, this photo with the elephants at the waterhole and the Kombis painted in zebra stripes has all the allure of an exciting day in the bush.
I found the photo, taken in Hwange National Park, in an old Rhodesian brochure. Of course, times have changed considerably since then. Rhodesia is now Zimbabwe, it is no longer permitted to be outside of your vehicle in national parks and the Bulli VW Kombi is a sought-after and highly collectible old timer.
Viewing wildlife and zebra stripes are just as popular, and the game-viewing vehicles at Etosha Safari Camp and Lodge are still branded with these striking markings.
The allure of the bush endures.
