I often see memorials in Namibia’s graveyards to the truck drivers who have spent hours and days on our roads transporting goods. Their valued work is remembered long after they are gone.
Truck drivers play a major role in the country’s logistics conveying local and imported items. Be it Namibian livestock and minerals, fruit and vegetables from South Africa or copper and iron ore from Zambia and Central Africa, they ensure that they are safely delivered to their destination.
Spending long hours away from their homes and families, and responsible for large and valuable loads, the truck drivers remain in good spirits. A road trip wouldn’t quite be the same without the friendly flash of lights between us in an exchange of gratitude.
Trucks, companies and truck drivers are portrayed on the many gravestones, honouring their work and their lives.
