    ‘Die Pampoenstalletjie’ - South Africa

    By Ron Swilling

‘Die Pampoenstalletjie’ on the R60 between Worcester and Robertson is a farmstall with oodles of charm. The picturesque old farm house is filled to the brim with bottles of preserves and jams, homemade gingerbeer that fizzes when you open it, jars of colourful sweets, biscuits, fresh and dried fruit, interesting pieces of ‘tuisnywerheid’ (home industry), rooibos tea – and pumpkins of all sorts, colours and sizes.

A shiny blue GMS truck packed with Halloween pumpkins and squash parked outside; a choice of freshly-baked roosterbrood with biltong and apricot-jam, enjoyed with a cup of moer koffie on the stoep; and a give-away recipe for ‘pampoentert’ on the counter add the finishing touches to simple padstal perfection.
