    A heavily-laden vehicle

The photo of this happy group and their heavily-laden vehicle was taken on the old road between Lüderitz and Aus.

Once the Baaiweg (Bay Road) traversed by ox-wagons, the first automobiles chanced their luck on this lonely stretch with little more than a sandy track to mark the route.

Today a tar road runs through the desert, linking the towns. We take our hats off to these travellers of old who did the trip on soft sand in searing heat and gusting wind, and still kept a smile on their faces.

This old jammy is now part of Canyon Roadhouse’s innovative and quirky display of automobiles from yesteryear.
