A smile – the currency of travel

    By Ron Swilling

You may need a passport when travelling between countries, some padkos and some dollars, but one of the most important things to carry with you is a smile – which provides the most essential currency of travel.

On my journeys I have noticed many worthwhile things, but one of the most important is how a simple smile breaks down boundaries and flies across a space in one simple gesture to say: “Hello, I am a friend”.

I remember a childhood game when you throw a smile from one person to another and everyone ends up laughing – a good icebreaker in any situation.

Instead of money, a smile from the heart is the essential exchange when travelling, without which we are strangers among strangers, instead of friends among friends.

And when you pack respect in your luggage along with your wad of smiles, your way is clear.
