Some Afrikaans words just can’t be translated and ‘Toggekry’ is one of them.
We spotted this wonderful farm name on a trip to the North and thought about how best to convey its meaning in English. We decided that ‘Eventually got there, against all odds’ came close, suggesting that the farmer possibly didn’t think he could find a place to establish a farm, and perhaps even nearly gave up, before finding one.
Can you do any better? How would you translate this descriptive Afrikaans word? We’d love to hear your thoughts.
