This unusual photo was taken at the Swakop River in the big flood of 1934.

Every few decades Namibia receives exceptional rainfall when the ephemeral rivers come down in flood and rush to the sea. Years to remember are 1933, 1934, 1963 and 2011.

In 1934 the Swakop River flooded its banks and a pulley system was rigged to enable people travelling between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay to safely cross the river. One of them was this nun who was expertly captured by an unknown photographer on her smooth ride above the swirling Swakop water.
