This Swakopmund jetty is unrecognisable to us more than a century later, but in the early 1910s the old harbour jetty served as a place to offload passengers and goods. A tug transported the passengers from their ship to the jetty, where they were raised, first unceremoniously in a basket and later in this more comfortable gondola. They were welcomed by friends, family and onlookers who were smartly dressed in accordance with the times, wearing suits and hats.
